Publishers of Detroit’s key ethnic newspapers discussed the vital role ethnic media plays in Michigan. The publishers were guests for the Spotlight on the News public affairs show with Chuck Stokes, program host and director of Public Affairs for WXYZ-TV, Channel 7, Detroit.
Guests who appeared on the program were Osama Siblani, publisher, Arab American News, Tack Young Kim, publisher, Michigan Korean Weekly, Arthur Horwitz, publisher, The Jewish News, and Elias Gutierrez, publisher, Latino Press.
The editors appeared on Spotlight On The News as part of a newly created association of ethnic media in the State of Michigan, New Michigan Media (NMM). This association represents more than 120 ethnic and minority media outlets in the state, which serve hundreds of thousands of readers, viewers and listeners in the Michigan media market.
The program regarding the presence of ethnic media in Michigan is scheduled to air mid-September. Spotlight On The News airs Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m. on WXYZ-TV, Channel 7.

New Michigan Media, NMM, is a network of ethnic and minority media in the State of Michigan which first came together in 2006 under the direction of Professor Hayg Oshagan, director of NMM, and Anne Marie Tyszka, assistant director, at Wayne State University's Department of Communication. The NMM network represents the 100+ ethnic and minority media outlets in Michigan, which serve hundreds of thousands of readers, viewers and listeners in the Michigan media market.
This year, NMM will hold news briefings, conferences, professional workshops, provide an ethnic news server and publish an ethnic and minority media directory.
NMM is funded and supported by a grant from the McCormick Foundation and is affiliated with New America Media, an organization which networked 700+ ethnic media outlets in California.
